RenomaLAB
RenomaLAB was established to provide specialist research services for art conservators, museum professionals, collectors, architects and designers.
Our laboratory specialises in conservation research, enabling the assessment of the current condition (state of preservation) and the causes of deterioration of cultural heritage objects. These findings form the foundation for developing appropriate treatment proposals.
Our material analyses determine the structure, composition and properties of both original and secondary materials present in cultural heritage objects, as well as the techniques and technologies used in their creation. We carry out comprehensive investigations of original interior finishes, decorative painting and architectural woodwork.
The results of our analyses inform the selection of suitable conservation methods and materials, ensuring effective restoration and long-term preservation.
Our Services
Our research determines the structure, composition and properties of both original materials and later additions, including bedding and pointing mortars, renders, architectural ceramics, and natural and artificial stone.
Our analyses include:
- Macroscopic analysis
- Microscopic analysis (including image registration)
- Chemical analysis (acid treatment)
- Determination of capillary properties (rate of capillary water suction, water absorption capacity)
- Mechanical strength testing
- Layer stratigraphy (preparation of cross-sections of paint layers, their analysis and microscopic image documentation)
- Identification of pigments and dyes
- Identification of binders
Determination of soluble salt content and salt distribution as well as identifying its sources:
- Quantitative analysis
- Qualitative analysis
Determination of moisture content and distribution, as well as identification of causes and sources.
We work closely with experts who conduct instrumental analyses that complement the analysis carried out in our in-house laboratory (including petrographic analysis and microbiological investigation).
